Killer Instinct Jennifer Lynn Barnes Books
If you have an inner geek, this story will probably scratch it behind the ears. If you enjoy a well-written murder-mystery/suspense tale, without the gratuitous violence and sex that too many of them wallow in, then you'll like this. The main heroine is a girl who has a knack for profiling, i.e. figuring out a stranger's personality and motivations, and anticipating future behavior, based on subtle clues. Her deductions are reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes at times, only more in the arena of psychology. Other misfit-savants in the story include a girl who is good at lying and detecting lies, a boy who is expert at reading body language, a boy profiler-prodigy with a shady past, and a girl genius with poor social skills. There doesn't seem to me to be anything supernatural in their gifts, though they are far beyond normal. The teens use their skills to solve murder cases, especially serial murders. They aren't 18 yet, so they are basically in a group home, which is also helping them to form the close human connections that most of them were lacking in their previous situations.I was first introduced to Ms. Barnes' writing through her Raised By Wolves trilogy, and that is also an excellent read. Her books are in the young adult genre but her writing and realistic characterizations are far above the usual YA book, or many adult novels, for that matter. I liked both of the Naturals books, they were a quick read for me. They did not lag or bore me at all, and there was enough humor and goodness throughout to keep the stories from being depressing. My only complaint is that I wish the books were a little longer and explored the different personalities a bit more. Her protagonists are compelling and likable. These books have intelligent plot-lines, with heart and a dash of humor.

Killer Instinct Jennifer Lynn Barnes Books Reviews
Love the characters and their interactions. They are human, flawed, believable. There is suspense that keeps you guessing. This is the second book in a series of 4. Some conflict has carried over from book one. It’s realistic and mesmerizing.
I read all the Natural books kind of a little immature (I am 29) but definitely a good read to help pass the flight layovers! I thought it was kind of ridiculous the whole love triangle she cant decide on who etc and they are always getting into trouble risking their lives but overall it def had me turning the page to read on.
The Naturals are back for another installment and what an intense read that was. Five youngsters with Natural gifts helping the FBI with different cases, what a talented bunch they all are. Non stop action and fast paced reading will have you glued from start to finish. Can't wait to read book 3.
In Killer Instinct, the author focused more on Dean's life and his serial killer father's ability to manipulate people around him. Good plot twists. The story leaves the reader wanting more.
Jennifer Lynn Barnes is simply the best at this game - she takes overdone genre cliches, mashes them into new forms, and the executes on the whole thing with such incredible precision that it is a joy to watch. Her books aren't "high literature" - instead they are incredibly effective entertainments that (incidentally!) have some fairly powerful metaphorical undertones about teenage life. In this second volume of her "Nautrals" series, she has our "special" junior serial killer catchers doing what they do best, in the most inappropriate special program ever devised by the FBI. Read the first volume first, but she's done it once again. Can't wait for the next one...
I really dig this series from Jennifer Barnes. I actually fell in love with her more recent, Fixer, series first and I just went back and found these.
This is book two, and it begins shortly after the end of the first story. There's some pretty intricate twists and turns in the actual story and some harrowing moments of action, especially near the end.
My chief complaint is the love triangle continues from the first novel and I think it's just drug out waaaaaay too long.
I thought the first book was a little tighter, but I feel this was still a solid continuation of the story and we got to explore Dean and Leah way more as characters.
A fun read.
Actual Rating 4.5 Stars
This book was pretty close to 5 stars for me, and I think it may have been if not for all the other truly amazing books I've read this year. Barnes' writing and plot both improve from The Naturals to this one.
I loved that we learn more about the backgrounds of each of the Naturals. It allowed me to connect more with the characters and enabled Cassie to do the same. I was a little annoyed to see the love triangle continue on, but (view spoiler). The characters form a great cast with diverse personalities that could both complement and contradict each other.
The suspense and mystery were balanced out perfectly by the humor. There are heavy moments and tense ones, but the comedic relief always came at the right moment making Killer Instinct highly entertaining.
