I have read all the other books in this series and they were all good and enjoyable and satisfying to read. This book however tops them all - Heather Long has somehow managed to improve out of sight in certain areas. I am trying to figure out why the story telling was so much better. The character development was superb. The suspense was beautifully balanced with the romance and the dialogue was very satisfying.
My eyes glaze over with bad language and excessive sex and fortunately there was not a lot of either. The male characters were well written and believable. The action and forward momentum have kicked up but the mysteries of her world have become so intriguing and well presented that we are in effect left with a cliffhanger in the very best sense and the reader is left wondering what the Russians will do next.
The care the author took in the writing of this novel made me wonder if she has a new editor because the quality of her world building and character dialogue is just so much better than the previous books.
Certainly whoever edited for typos missed the point that when you put someone through the wringer it's about washing clothes not a bell tower. And I did raise my eyebrows about finding 'out' mate rather than finding our mate and there were a couple more sentences that didn't make sense so whoever did the final proofreading wasn't that good - it is really important to get fresh eyes for that because after the first 50,000 words any author just reads what they thought they wrote, not what is actually there.
This book raises the whole series to a higher level and it was a joy to read such a disciplined tour de force - a great story - and well told.

There a few series that can hold my attention for a long time, and Ms. Heather Long has created one that has me on the edge of my seat, in a very good way. We met Diesel and Ranae in previous books, but you can read this by itself (I really recommend to read the complete series though). Diesel is the Alpha of the Yukon Pack. When we meet him in the previous books he is cold, distant and rude. But then Ms. Long gave us all this twist and turns and Me..I fell in love with this Wolf...lordy, lordy!!!! I don't want to give spoilers, but the reasons he has to be how he is will make you cry a little and laugh a little. Then Ranea, her emotional growth to a stunning hunter to a mate is wonderful to see. And then Ms. Long...what we are going to do with Julian??? The secondary characters are wonderful too. I have to praise Ms. Long for her world building skills. She has gave us a lot of unexpected twist and turns that will have you guessing when the next book will be published.
Heather Long hit my favorite authors list with her Fevered and Marine series and has maintained it with this series. I've read them all and am always excited to see a new release. This one doesn't disappoint. If you are looking for a great standalone with an HEA, then look no further.

Woo hoo! What a ride! Diesel, the oldest Alpha in the U.S. packs, is about to have his world shaken up by Ranae Buckley a young hunter/envoy from the Willow Bend pack. Ranae is about to have her perception of the Yukon pack shook up. When these two meet worlds collide. I was worried that Diesel would be too old and set in his ways to fully appreciate Ranae. But I should have known better. Ranae would take delight in bringing Diesel kicking and screaming back to life. I love Diesels sense of humor and the fact that Ranae doesn’t just roll over for him. The are some surprising revelations about the enforcer Julian and I hope we get his story soon. I love this world and the folks who live in it. Well done Heather Long.
