For as long as there has been history, civilizations have been at the forefront. Thriving cities across the world flourished, each with unique social structures, artistic production, languages, and religions. Recorded history can only report so much on these peoples, and many cultures have been lost to time over the last millennium. Yet each of them left behind an impact in the world, from the religious temples of the Ancient Mayans to the philosophy of the Myceans and even the technology of the Indus Valley. Each one has shaped society today, and as historians continue to speculate the cause of their disappearance, we are left to wonder who were these people, why did they flee their fortresses, and what have they left behind that can tell us a little about their way of life? Archeologists and professionals have long been baffled by many of these civilizations, which are long gone but not forgotten.

I really want to be fair to this book, but three stars is the best that I can do with the current edition. On the plus side, it covers a lot of ground for it's length. The ten civilizations are described in good detail, and serves as a better-than-average primer on each. Without any notes on the target audience, I get the feeling that "Ten Civilizations" is written with a teen audience in mind, or as a guide for a person who knows very little about the subject matter.
Unfortunately, "Ten Civilizations" was delivered with a grey font. It was barely readable, and my older Kindle doesn't have a provision to make it darker. When I pulled it up on Kindle for PC, it worked just fine. I feel a little like a jerk for insisting that my copy work perfectly on every device, but isn't that a minimum requirement?
"Ten Civilizations" could have used a better editor than just SpellCheck. There are plenty of words that were just plain wrong - properly spelled, yes, but the wrong word entirely. 'Worse' for 'worst' was a common mistake.
Frankly, I couldn't finish it as delivered. Once the font is changed and some of the glaring errors fixed, this could be a five-star book.
